Timberley Academy is a Fully Accessible Mainstream (FAM) Academy with around 525 children, located in the Shard End area of Birmingham. The school is committed to inclusive education and meeting the needs of all children, in a happy, caring and stimulating school environment.
In August of 2015 Holborn were called in by independent cost and property consultants, Robinson Low Francis (RLF) to assess the school heating system, paying particular attention to the boiler house, with four of the schools seven boilers failing beyond repair.
Unfortunately the school found it difficult to maintain adequate levels of heating, particularly for the children with special needs, in the Infants section. There was also a historic problem with certain parts of the school suffering poor heating, even when the system had been operating at its best.
Holborn engineers were tasked with undertaking a detailed survey to discover and evaluate all the issues, before preparing a costed technical solution that RLF could help the school use to make an emergency funding application to restore the heating system, as quickly as possible.
Over a period of 2-3 months we prepared various options, working closely with RLF to help with the funding application. Happily the emergency funding was granted late in December 2015 to allow work to begin.
In January 2016 we were awarded the contract to undertake the boiler replacement and various modifications to the existing heating system, with work commencing the following month.
We maintained the existing heating and hot water systems, whilst stripping out redundant equipment identified in the initial assessments. The new boiler system was installed, along with a state-of-the-art Building Management System (BMS).
The new boiler system consisted of three Hamworthy Heating, 250kw mixed gas condensing modular Fleet boilers and a high efficient plate heat exchanger, to provide hydraulic separation of the new boilers from the existing pipe work, which was more than 40 years old.
The existing system control panel and obsolete JEL BMS system was removed and replaced with a new control panel and Trend IQ4 BMS system. Throughout the project our engineers worked closely with the school management team to provide heating and hot water whenever required, whilst ensuring a seamless transition to the new heating system.
We also carried out a number of pipe work modifications to the existing system that included correcting flow control valves that had originally been fitted backwards and modifying the restrictive pipe work installation.
As a result of this work the Nursery area heating was improved significantly with the site manager commenting: “we’ve got heat in areas that haven’t been warm for 10 years.”
As part of the package, the BMS has been provided with web browser support and three pages of graphics that allow the school site manager to check and adjust the heating from his desk top PC or mobile device, all without incurring the full cost of a Trend Supervisor system.
The new package of boilers and Trend BMS system provides closely matched boiler firing rate to actual heating demand, with two variable temperature circuits and a primary circuit with variable boiler firing rate that will see significant energy saving for the school.
